faq'S

What do Cadets do?

Sea Cadets learn valuable skills that help with their transition to adulthood. They come out of the program as self-aware, self-sufficient leaders with an invested interest in their communities and the skills to actively contribute to society in meaningful ways. Throughout their training, Sea Cadets learn about teamwork, problem-solving, and effective communication, and participate in activities to improve their communities, all through the lens of a maritime focus.

Are Cadets expected to join the Canadian Armed Forces?

As a cadet you are not a member of the Canadian Armed Forces, and you are not expected to join the military. While you are introduced to Sea, Army or Air activities of the Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) and certain traditions, you are also introduced to many other career options outside of the CAF.

Is there a cost to join cadets?

No! The Cadet Program is funded by the Department of National Defence in partnership with the civilian Navy League, Army Cadet League and Air Cadet League of Canada. The civilian sponsor requires local community support to meet its obligations that include accommodations, training aids and equipment and program enhancements not otherwise provided. Parents are expected to participate in and contribute to fundraising as required by the League’s local sponsoring element.

The Department of National Defence/Canadian Armed Forces assumes costs (including uniform and travel) for Cadets. Consequently, membership in the Cadet Program provides thousands of Canadian youth with unique opportunities free of charge that they might not otherwise experience — making the Cadet Program a viable option.

How old do you have to be to join cadets?

To join cadets you must be at least 12 years old and under 19 years old. To join as a civilian volunteer, civilian instructor or become a Cadet Instructors Cadre officer, you need to be aged 19 or more.

Is there cadet option for younger children?

Yes, there is the Navy League Cadet Program. More information can be found about their program HERE.
